The Madness Of March

March 22, 2019
By Jane Whitmore , Emmetsburg News

March is a crazy month - "madness" if you will. We start the third month of each year either coming in like a lamb or a lion. Next, Daylight Savings time begins and throws us all off kilter. And, too, in March the robins come home for the summer.

St. Patrick's Day is the highlight of our month. We had a wonderful celebration, thanks to the hard work of our St. Pat's Association members. No doubt they are already planning next year's celebration - diligent young workers that they are.

Personally, a big "Thank You" goes out to the St. Pat's Board for asking me to be Grand Marshal of the parade. What an honor! The weekend was so much fun - seeing friends from far and near as we celebrated with the Irish.

Our next big project of the month is the NCAA Basketball Tournament. How many of you fill out a bracket? Our family has been filling out brackets for years and, in recent years, we participate in a family challenge. Our brackets are filled out and we're ready for the games to begin.

I don't pretend to know a lot about basketball and the various teams. I listen a bit to the sports prognosticators, then fill out my bracket based a little on loyalty, a little on performance, and a little on perennial winners.

Even though Duke was proclaimed the overall number one seed, that is not my chosen team to win it all. And, there will be a Cinderella team come to the top. It might be Murray State or Wofford or Marquette. Can't say I know anything about these teams, but they are good enough to be there.

Iowa State and Iowa are favorites - Iowa State because they have done so well this season (and earned the Big 12 Championship) and Iowa because they are, well, Iowa. Michigan State and Michigan are also favorites, along with Villanova and North Carolina.

From way back when, my rule of thumb has been to always pull Gonzaga out at least two spots. I don't remember a time when they did not advance at least to the Sweet 16.?Last year I chose them to win and they did not. So, this has got to be their year.

Who is in my Final Four??Michigan State, Villanova, North Carolina and Gonzaga. My uneducated guess is Villanova and Gonzaga playing for the National Championship and Gonzaga coming out on top.

We'll all be glued to the TV, watching the games unfold and ending each round with our brackets getting demolished. Just once, I'd like to have a winner.
