Services for Marvin John Thiesse will be held on Sunday, April 14 at 2:00 pm at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. Rev. John Koopman will officiate. Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Fairmont, MN.

There will be a visitation on Saturday, April 13 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.

The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marvin John Louis Thiesse, son of William H. and Amanda (Leiding) Thiesse, was born June 5, 1928 in Ceylon, MN. He received his education in Ceylon, graduating from Ceylon High School.

In 1946, Marv enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, serving until 1948. In 1950, he was recalled to serve in the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged, Marv returned to Minnesota where he attended the University of Minnesota, earning a degree in Agricultural Education in 1954.

On September 14, 1950, Marvin was united in marriage to Eileen Moeller at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont, MN. To this union three children were born.

Marv taught high school agricultural classes in Winnebago, MN. from 1954 until 1966. While living in Minnesota, Marv was active in the Minnesota F.F.A. and the American Legion in Winnebago, MN.

In 1966 he accepted a position in Cherokee, where he was employed in Ag Business. He remained at this job until 1970 when he began teaching at Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg. Marv retired from the college in 1993.

Marv was devoted and faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served as an Elder and held various offices on committees both locally and at the district level. He supported and was willing to help at the church in any capacity necessary.

Marv was very involved in conservation, instilling the importance of this in his children. He always had a hunting dog and enjoyed teaching his children to hunt. After his retirement, Marv volunteered many hours at the Lost Island Nature Center. He was an avid wood carver and gardener, sharing produce and wood carvings with friends, family and neighbors. Marv loved spending time with his family and was known as "Milt" to his nieces and nephews.

Marvin passed away Sunday, April 7, 2019, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Amanda Thiesse; brothers and sisters, Walter Thiesse, Clarence Thiesse, Elvera Halverson, Luella Beckendorf, Sylvan Thiesse and Dr. Elmer Thiesse.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen of Emmetsburg; his children, Mark (Cindy) Thiesse of Olivia, MN, Jim (Theresa) Thiesse of Spencer, and Sara (Alan) VanBuren of Spencer; five grandchildren, Dr. Rebecca Thiesse (Mark Rivier), Amanda Thiesse (John Meyer), Hannah Rossow, Natalie Thiesse and Laura Thiesse; great granddaughter, Evelyn Rossow; a brother, Donald Thiesse of Winona, MN; a sister, Arlene (Donald) Preston of St. Paul, MN; a sister-in-law, Audrey Thiesse of Wayzata, MN; many nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.
