RUTHVEN -- A Mass of Christian Burial for Ellen Kay Hoben of Ruthven was held Saturday, May 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. The Rev. Bill Schreiber was the celebrant.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Ruthven. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Ruthven was in charge of arrangements.

Ellen Kay Hoben, daughter of Earl and Arlene (Heighton) Hoben, was born March 3, 1940 in Emmetsburg. She received her education in Ruthven, graduating from Ruthven Consolidated School in 1958. Following high school Ellen attended Estherville Junior College for one year and then moved to Iowa City where she worked as a C.N.A. at Oakdale TB Sanitarium when this facility became part of the University of Iowa Hospital.

In 1984 Ellen moved back to Ruthven where she made her home until the time of her death. Ellen was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Ladies Guild in Ruthven.

Ellen was an avid Hawkeye fan and loved to read, always having a book in her hand or on a stand beside her. She enjoyed watching old movies, especially those with Tom Selleck or John Wayne and she always watched the TV series, Blue Blood. Ellen also liked listening to Glen Campbell. She was active with her nieces and nephews and looked forward to every opportunity she had to spend time with them.

Ellen passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at the Ruthven Community Care Center, at the age of 79. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Arlene Hoben; a sister, Shirley Krieg; a brother, Jim Hoben; brother-in-law, Frank Baloun; stepfather, Gene Boblit; a nephew, Quint Dyer; a niece, Melissa Dyer; a great niece Melissa Storey; and a great nephew, Lucas Krieg.

She is survived by a brother, Bill Hoben and his wife, Julie of Coralville; two sisters, Sharon Baloun of Lakefield, MN and Martha Dyer and her husband, Ken of Ruthven; brother-in-law, Roger Krieg of Ruthven; sister-in-law, Joan Hoben of Laurens; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
