LARGE MOUTH BASS were stocked into Five Island Lake last week. Mike Hawkins, District Fisheries Biologist, and Kim Hawkins, Manager of the Spirit Lake Fish Hatchery, released the fish into the south bay of the lake adjacent to First Island. Fish stocking is an annual project that is also part of the larger restoration project that includes watershed restoration. Carp have been removed, and carp population studies are being conducted to improve the fish population in the lake. These large mouth bass were available through Pure Fishing in Spirit Lake. The adult fish had been used in their research as they create lures and bait. The bass are smart and soon have to be recycled back into their natural habitat. Mike and Kim released 227 large mouth bass into Five Island Lake, each weighing between a pound and a half and two pounds. --Jane Whitmore photos
