YARD OF THE MONTH -- The Jana and Bill Harris home, 2507 First Street, has been designated the August Yard of the Month by the Palo Alto Garden Club. Jana is pictured with just one of several garden spots in the yard. This is the home where Jana (Moore)?Harris grew up, built by her parents in 1953. There have been three owners: the Moore family, the Fantz family and now Jana and Bill Harris who moved back to Emmetsburg in 2016. Looking around the yard, there are some plants that were planted by Jana’s mother, Lillian, including rose and peony bushes, shrubs and rhubarb. Mina Fantz added some color to the yard and expanded the flower beds. Now Jana has put her stamp on the corner lot. Some of the many daylilies are still in bloom, in addition to the numerous hydrangea plants. With a lot of shade, hostas are a good fit around the perimeter and in the window box. Islands of perennials and annuals dot the landscape, with something in bloom throughout the season. At a glance, one can see Russian sage, columbine, clematis, and phlox, with a variety of variegated plants and shrubs, in addition to dogwood and a stately birch tree that at one time had a strawberry patch at its feet. Check out the fort in the backyard.
