The Palo Alto Garden Club earned several awards in open class at State Garden Club meeting earlier this month.

During the regular meeting on Tuesday, August 13, President Cynthia Berkland announced the awards to the club.

Berkland reported the club won four blue awards at state, including the Memorial Conservation Award, Article on Gardening, Garden Therapy, and the Civic Achievement. Plant it Pink won the red award.

The club also received a monetary membership award. Club President Cynthia Berkland was honored with the Circle of Roses Award as was long time member Nancy Hunsaker. Berkland was also elected State Treasurer.

Roll call had 19 members responding with a photo, sample or naming a shade plant they enjoyed. This led into Angie Beem's program on Shade-Loving Plants.

Beem has the challenge of finding plants that will grow in abundant shade. Vegetables such as beets, peas, and spinach thrive is a lot of shade.

The upcoming District Meeting was discussed and Lois Enger will print invitations.

Jane Whitmore discussed the Blue Star Memorial Project, giving the club an update with photos of possible ways of displaying the plaque. She will be checking on the price of concrete.

The Yard of the Month went to Bill and Jana Harris. Jamie welcomes suggestions for future Yard's of the Month winners, with no limitations. The only requirement is that the yard is within the county.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, September 10 at the Nature Center on Lost Island Lake north of Ruthven. Kaitlin Anderson, Jane Whitmore, and Kay Kibbie will serve as hostesses. Meet at Harrison Park at 8:30 am.
