A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Ann Young of Emmetsburg will be held Friday, Nov. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Celebrant is the Rev. Bill Schreiber.

Inurnment will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Thursday, Nov. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home. C.D. of A. Rosary is Thursday at 4:30 p.m. with Vigil Service at 5 p.m.

Mary Ann (Ries) Young, daughter of Sebastian (Barney) and Amelia (Hronek) Ries was born Feb. 7, 1932 in Pocahontas. Baptized on Feb. 12, 1932, she was educated at the Pocahontas Catholic Schools, attending grade school at Sacred Heart School, and graduating from Pocahontas Catholic High School in 1949.

Mary Ann continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) where she completed her education and earned her teaching degree. She began her teaching career at Greely, Iowa in 1951 and followed with stints in Lehigh, and her final position in Fort Dodge in 1958.

On Aug. 9, 1958 Mary Ann was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) Young in Pocahontas at the Resurrection of our Lord Catholic Church. They lived in Pocahontas until 1960, when they moved to Emmetsburg. To this union six children were born.

Mary Ann was a member of Holy Family Catholic Parish in Emmetsburg. She was a devoted mother, wife and friend to one and all. She was an avid member of numerous organizations and groups to include, Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA), DCCW, 4-H, Catholic educator in CCD, RCIA, Cursillo, Hospital and VFW Auxiliary member and an Advocate for Peace and Justice and volunteer for Palo Alto Resident Hall Care.

Mary Ann worked as the Children's Librarian at the Emmetsburg Pubic Library from 1979-2000. She loved the kids and gained a generation of friends from this position.

In her retirement, Mary Ann and Bob took numerous trips around the United States from the east to west coasts, and Texas to Alaska. Mary Ann loved her plants and flowers and was active in the Garden Club, knitting/crocheting, sewing, and playing cards.

Mary Ann passed away on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019, peacefully, with her family at her side, at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years Bob; her parents; two brothers, Fr Don Ries and Fr Richard Ries; and infant son, Thomas.

Mary Ann is survived by her children Ann Marie (Tom) of League City, TX, William Michael (Kari) of Minneapolis, MN, Ellen Frances of Houston, TX, James Andrew (Sherri) of North Pole, AK, and Susan Kathleen, Katy, TX. Eight grandchildren: Nicholas Erwin, Ariel Askeland and Leif Young, Cody Young, Andrew Young, Katie Young Thralls, Emma Young Stagl, Matthew Young, and Briar Lavinder.
