Every one of us has had the 'winter blues' or have just 'blah' at one time or another. The feeling generally never last more than made a couple of weeks. Neither of these is SAD.

SAD is an acronym for Seasonal Affective Disorder. Yes, this is a real medical problem and it affects upwards of 15% of the entire world.

SAD is a condition that typically occurs in the winter months as daylight decreases. There are however individuals that suffer anytime of the year from SAD.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) has several symptoms including: chronic fatigue, gaining weight, feelings of depression, feeling apathetic, irritability, mood swing sand insomnia. It is possible to have more than one of these symptoms at a time.

As I said in the beginning research has shown that 15% of the world's population suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder, with the condition occurring more in women because of their hormonal functions.

Some individuals can be sensitive to the changes in seasonal temperature from warm to cold along with shorter days. This leads to a mild depression that lasts weeks or longer.

Anyone with symptoms of SAD should seek see their doctor or psychiatrist for evaluation. Medical professionals have certain criteria for diagnosing SAD including: sleeping the majority of the time, depression at the same time every year, weight gain, changes in mood, and avoiding social contact. Although SAD and depression have similar symptoms, SAD occurs about the same time each year and lasts for several weeks.

Seasonal affective disorder is considered a major depressive disorder that occurs intermittently for at least two years. It is possible to have seasonal affective disorder with other mood conditions such as bipolar disorder, and this makes it more difficult to overcome the symptoms of depression and lethargy.

Many scientists believe that a lack of serotonin and melatonin is where SAD starts. Both substances play a part in our sleep patterns.
