The Emmetsburg girls' and boys' basketball teams would struggle early in the week, both facing setbacks against Newell-Fonda at home on Tuesday, Jan. 28. However, the E-Hawk squads would finish the week strong with victories over Manson-Northwest Webster (MNW) on Thursday, Jan. 30 and West Bend-Mallard (WBM) on Friday, Jan. 31.

The Emmetsburg boys would play hard at Emmetsburg High School on Tuesday night but fall short against Newell-Fonda, 50-59.

"I felt that we played really hard," said Head Coach Bill Geelan. "Our guys made it very difficult for them to get easy looks on offense. I thought we handled their defensive pressure pretty well for the majority of the game. We made a few too many mistakes in the fourth quarter and that allowed them to build a lead that we couldn't overcome. We also struggled shooting the ball from outside which was something we needed to do well to win."

Thursday's 52-31 win over MNW would be a different story as the E-Hawks would get off to an early 16-4 lead in the first quarter.

"We had a few guys really step up offensively and knock in shots to help build a lead from the early going," said Coach Geelan. "We also made a big improvement on the defensive boards and they didn't get many clean looks at the hoop."

Friday's 59-25 win over the Wolverines would also see an explosive start to the game, the E-Hawks outscoring WBM 32-6 in the first half.

"I was excited to see our guys get out to a hot start shooting the ball. Also, really clamping down on defense in the first half was a sign that we were ready to go from the start."

The Lady E-Hawks would also play a tough game on Tuesday night against Newell-Fonda but fall after the Mustangs put together a fourth quarter run to overtake the girls for the 55-44 win.

Thursday would see the Lady E-Hawks beat MNW on the road, 63-34, and on Friday the girls would dominate the Wolverines, 70-25.

The 13-4 Lady E-Hawks and 9-8 E-Hawks host Alta-Aurelia on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
