MSCT Play’s Location is Concern

To the Editor:

There has been much discussion in the media on the upcoming play, The Vagina Monologues. We could go back and forth on whether we agree or disagree on this all day. I am of the opinion that our bodies are a gift from God and we are expected to treat them with the upmost respect. The female body is a sacred thing and therefore should be treated as such. Through our faith, my husband and I are teaching our girls to be strong, to respect their bodies and cherish them as a gift and not a toy. It's not enslaving, it's empowering. I understand this may be different from what others believe and that's okay.

Holy Family Parish is not boycotting the play, nor are they trying to cancel it. Freedom of speech and expression are not in question here. The play is in direct contrast to our Catholic faith and, in my opinion, many other Christian faiths. The parish is simply asking for the play to be moved to a different location.

We are in a small town, a place where you wave to people as you drive down the street, where you may be related to half the people in the room, a place where you can actually go to your next door neighbor and borrow a cup of sugar. No, we are not a large city or even a large town. However, we are all different with different ethnicities, backgrounds, beliefs and faiths. Let's use some of that small town, neighborly kindness, and respect the faith and morals of Holy Family Parish, which is one of the many wonderful faith communities in our town.
