For the Wolverines of WBM, senior Connor Fehr earned sixth place at 170 pounds and junior Donavon Hanson placed eighth at 106 pounds.

In Class 2A, Emmetsburg's Bret Hoyman, a senior, earned a sixth place finish for the E-Hawks at 152 pounds while teammate and fellow senior Mason Griffin finished in eighth at 170 pounds.

A total of seven area wrestlers competed in this year's state tournament which began on Thursday, Feb. 20.

E-Hawks

Three E-Hawk wrestlers left it all on the floor of Wells Fargo Arena - Hoyman, Griffin, and sophomore Matt Wirtz at 182 pounds.

At 152 pounds, Hoyman stumbled a bit in his opening round, falling to Riley Burke of Iowa Falls in a 14-7 decision. Hoyman would next defeat Van Meter's Bryce Cole in a 6-3 decision before a 3-1 Sudden Victory win over Hunter Pesek of New Hampton and a 5-3 Sudden Victory win over Kristian Gunderson of Forest City placed him in the Consolation Semifinal match against Wyatt Appleseth of Panorama. Hoyman would be defeated in a 6-0 decision by Appleseth before falling to Winterset's Tyler Brown in a 17-5 Major decision for sixth place.

At 170 pounds, Griffin defeated Porter Smith of Bondurant in a 3:05 Win by fall (WBF) in the opening round but came up short in a 6-2 Sudden Victory loss to Jax Flynn of Solon. Griffin would next defeat Aiden Carr of Gilbert in a 3-1 decision before falling to Caleb Swalla of Van Meter in a 4-2 decision. Griffin would earn eighth place after a close 12-10 decision went to Cole Davis of Independence in the final match.

Wirtz, at 182 pounds, came up short against Austin Roos of Benton Community in an opening round 6-0 decision before falling to Colby Wilmesherr from Bishop Heelan in a 5-2 decision.

"Extremely proud of our wrestlers," said Head Coach Tyler Bjustrom in a Twitter post on Sunday. "Wrestling isn't always about the result. These boys committed themselves and worked hard because they had a goal. They didn't quite reach their goal but that doesn't take away from the respect we have for them."

Titans

Head Coach Alex Helmich and his senior Titans from GTRA entered the state tournament ready for battle.

At 160 pounds, Roth handily defeated Zach Taylor of South Winneshiek in an opening round 17-2 Technical Fall win at 4:29 before falling to Elijah Wagner of Lake Mills in a close 4-3 decision. Roth would next defeat Aidan Udell of Regina (Iowa City) in a 14-5 Major decision but come up short in a 4-3 decision against Gabe Carter of New London. In his final match, Roth would take down Teegan Tschampel of Hinton in a 3:07 WBF.

In the opening round at 182 pounds, Cacek brought down Kaiden Hendricks of Riverside in a 1:44 WBF before defeating both Jackson Dewald of Westwood in a 6-1 decision and Carson Lynott of West Sioux in a 5-1 decision. In the title match, Cacek would be pinned by Thomas Even of Don Bosco at 4:31 to earn second place honors.

Wolverines

Coach Payton Rice of WBM and his duo of Hanson and Fehr entered Wells Fargo with high hopes.

At 106 pounds, Hanson would come up short in the opening round against Gable Porter of Underwood, falling in a 4-2 decision before defeating both Paul De Jong of North Mahaska in a 3:39 WBF and Quincy Happel of Lisbon in a 6-2 decision. Hanson would then be defeated by West Sioux's Mikey Baker in a 3-2 decision before being pinned in 1:07 by Drew Ehlen of Mount Ayr in the final match to finish in eighth place.

At 170 pounds, Fehr would stumble in the opening round, losing in a 4-2 decision to Carson Tenold of Don Bosco. Fehr would next defeat St. Albert's Cael McLaren in a 11-10 decision, win in a 12-10 Sudden Victory over Lisbon's Max Kohl, and edge out Ty Schmidt of Northeast-Goose Lake in a 7-6 Ultimate tie breaker. Fehr would fall to Tristan Mulder of Western Christian in a 16-6 Major decision before coming up short in a 5-2 loss to Bryson Freeberg of Tri-Center for sixth place.
