Elsie Wigdahl

November 30, 1926 - April 2, 2020

Due to the regulations set forth by the Governor's Public Health Disaster Declaration, no public visitation or service will be held at this time.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

RUTHVEN -- Elsie Elaine Paysen was born in Clinton on Nov. 30, 1926 to Christian Paysen and Ida Frederika Louise Stuedemann. She attended rural schools near Camanche and graduated from Clinton High School in 1944. She attended Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN for one year and transferred to Iowa State University where she earned a BS degree in dietetics.

During those years at ISU, Elsie met a GI named Alden Wigdahl. Alden and Elsie were married Sept. 26, 1948. They loved their life together on the farm where they raised their four children: Diane, Barb, Susie and Jeff. She was always there for her family, with a cheerful smile and a listening ear.

Elsie was a member of the Silver Lake Homemakers Club, the Ruthven Women's Club, the Palo Alto County Garden Club, and the Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid and Circles.

Elsie loved to fish and to watch the sun set over Silver Lake. She was an ardent gardener and loved growing flowers and fed her family abundantly with canned goods from her big garden. She learned to paint at Night School and created dozens of beautiful paintings.

She used her creativity to enter contests of all kinds, but especially the Pillsbury Bake-Off, where she was a finalist many times. Alden and Elsie enjoyed traveling to the many cooking contests around the country. In all of their travels, the trips to the mountains were her favorite, as she enjoyed God's amazing creation. Every year she looked forward to making dozens of entries at the Clay County Fair with her baked goods, canned goods, jams and jellies, and flowers. But most of all, she cherished her family and expressed that love in so many ways.

She is preceded in death by daughter Barb (Elmer), parents Chris and Ida, brothers Albert, Edward and Leonard and sister Esther, and one great-granddaughter.

She is survived by daughters Diane (Rich) and Susie ( Jim) and son, Jeff (Sandy). Elsie was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren include: Nancy Heerema, Mary McCune, Melissa Belis; Josh, Michael and Heidi Hansen ; Kelsey, Jack and Cal Koz-lowski; Melody, Justin, Nathaniel, Hannah, April and Lydia Wigdahl.

Elsie was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and friend, full of cheer and optimism, making her home a place of kindness, love and fun!
