Celebrating Our Small Town Heroes

April 24, 2020
Emmetsburg News
'Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary.'
- Gerard Way

Amid the chaos of the current COVID-19 pandemic and the seemingly constant stream of heartbreak and disappointment it brings, two Emmetsburg women have decided to fight back and bring a little joy to the lives of others. Hilary Schrieber (pictured, top center) and Brooke Maaland (top right), along with their children (from left: Braydan, Kamden, and JT), started a program called 'Small Town Heroes' in an effort to put a smile on the (masked) faces of others and to recognize those individuals who are going above and beyond during this difficult time. Several days a week they deliver a pizza to different 'heroes' in the community and offer their thanks. What started as a simple act of kindness to celebrate the Great American Takeout event on March 24 has blossomed into a full-scale program, as the women now receive donations from the public and nominations to determine the next hero recipient. Donation and nomination information can be found on Facebook @Hilary Schrieber.
