Emmetsburg Catholic School Gives School Closure Updates

April 24, 2020
Emmetsburg News

Emmetsburg Catholic School (ECS) released the following statement on Monday in regards to the recent school closure:

On Friday, April 17, Governor Reynolds closed all Iowa school buildings. The building may be closed, but ECS is still here, the learning has not stopped. We are still required to pro-vide Continuous Learning for all students.

Principal Jean Hyslop has asked all faculty to keep track of students that submit assignments, login on Zoom and participate, and students/families posting items on Facebook. Teachers will be posting this on Jupiter Grades.

Governor Reynolds and the Iowa Department of Education will require a Return to Learn plan to be submitted to the state by July 1. The Return to Learn Plan will deal with how we come back to school in August.

After reviewing attendance and assignment completion, ECS will have to determine how to move forward with learning in the fall.

What do we need to do to review for all students?

Where did teachers leave off with their students?

There will be many other factors as determined by the state.

All teachers including vocal, art, and P.E. have been communicating with students and parents to provide Continuous Learning since March 23. This includes 3-year-old and 4-year-old preschool classes.

Following are ways that teachers are communicating Continuous Learning:

Google Classroom

Packets of learning activities

Activities for students to do at home

Phone calls to students and parents

Drop offs at homes

Drive by at school

Websites like Lexia, Spelling City, Dreambox, Khan Academy, Spanish, and Prodigy are a few examples.

Please check on your students if they are saying they are putting in hours on the computer for school work, ask them to see it. Many students get caught up in games and lose track of time.

We will be doing another Drive-By Pickup around May 1. Watch for details.

The staff at ECS has done everything that I have asked of them. You couldn't ask for a better group of people to teach your children. They have had to learn many new skills for Continuous Learning and they have come through like champions.

As a staff, we are very sad that we will not be returning, as I am sure you and your children are as well. Let us know if we can help.
