Feed Our Kids - Emmetsburg Receives Donation From MidAmerican Energy Company Foundation

May 5, 2020
Emmetsburg News

During this unprecedented time, school buildings may be closed, but feeding hungry children is still continuing.

Emmetsburg Community Schools are still providing breakfast/lunch every day and Feed Our Kids-Emmetsburg (FOK-E) is continuing to provide weekend food bags!

Kate Schick, West and Middle School Counselor, is handing out our weekend food bags on Thursday morning when parents pick up their breakfast/lunch bags or they are being delivered to them by the bus route.

This week FOK-E'burg received a $2,500 donation from Mid-American Energy Company Foundation to support local food insecurity relief.

"The pandemic has put strains on our customers, businesses and non-profits everywhere," Kathryn Kunert, Mid-American Energy vice-president, economic connections and integrations, said. "We live in the communities we serve and are proud to not only provide the reliable electric and gas services that people need now more than ever, but to support the organizations that are on the front line meeting other essential needs, such as food security and emotional well-being."

FOK-E'burg Committee has decided to use this generous donation to provide the weekend food bags for one additional month. Instead of ending as we normally would at the end of the school year, we will provide weekend bags through the end of June.

At this time the plan to distribute our bags in June will be for students to continue to pick up their weekend bags through the Emmetsburg Community School District school lunch program.

Here is a brief history of our organization: Feed Our Kids-Emmetsburg is a 50I(c) (3) organi- zation which supplies kid friendly, nutritious meals on weekends for food insecure children in our community.

FOK-E' Burg was organized in the summer of 2015 with a group of community members and organizations who saw a need. Initially, we worked with the Food Bank of Iowa, through the Federal Backpack Program. Strict guidelines of who could be served and the quality of the food provided were reasons we decided to operate our own program, independent of these organizations. We now are able to serve PreK-High School verses Kindergarten-6th grade only, and we choose which products we want to include in our bags.

At the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year we were serving 62 kids each week. Our numbers steadily increased: October - 68, November - 78, December - 80, and January-March 84-85. These numbers show the obvious need in our community for weekend food bags. Our food cost has greatly increased along with the numbers we are serving.

Each week students receive the following individual servings: 2 boxes of breakfast cereal, 1 macaroni and cheese, 1 Chef Boyar-dee meal, and 1 package of Ramen noodle mix, 2 Jiff peanut butters, 4 jelly packets, 2 Juicy Juice boxes, 1 microwave popcorn, 1 vegetable, 1 applesauce, 1 granola bar, and 1 fruit cup. We purchase all the food for the bags from the Graettinger Market, as they were willing to work with us and order the food we need. We have a few allergy kids and we provide specialty food for them, which is an additional cost.

Each food bag cost approximately $7.00 per bag; $2,500 per month to provide bags for 85 children.

It takes a lot of donations and volunteers to operate this program. Luckily, we live in a very generous community and we have great volunteers!

If you are interested in making a donation, it can be sent to Feed Our Kids-Emmetsburg, c/o Katie Schmitt, Treasurer, West Elementary School, 602 Call Street, Emmetsburg, Iowa 50536.

We are always in need of additional committee members to take on an active role. If you would consider joining our team or just volunteering when needed, please feel free to contact us by sending a note to the above address, contact one of the committee members directly or connect to us through our Facebook page - Feed Our Kids-Emmetsburg.

THANK YOU for supporting our program. We could not do what we do without generous people and organizations like you!

Together we are making a difference in our community.
