Emmetsburg News
“We are so excited to be having the Summer Bash this year,” said St. Pat’s co-chair Stephanie Mehan. “Due to COVID-19 we have made several adjustments to our Summer Bash. We are able to pull the event off this year with the help and recommendations from Public Health.” Summer Bash is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, July 25-26 at the Palo Alto County Fairgrounds, 2101 Madison Street. The event is co-sponsored by the St. Patrick’s Association and Emmetsburg Fire Department. “We had to cancel a number of our events,” Mehan continued. “The events we are having are outside, so we are looking forward to a great weekend.” Highlight of the weekend is the annual barbecue contest. Teams will begin arrriving Saturday. The number of teams has grown to 30, including a group that was on BBQ Pitmasters on TV. The BBQ competition will be judged by members of the Kansas City Barbecue Society. “Since our contest has over 25 teams it will be a qualifying event,” Mehan explained. “This means it will qualify the winner for the Jack and Royal contests.” The Double Steak competition is Saturday. “Basically, this is two steak contests in one day, back to back,” she said. “We provide them two ribeyes. They can cook one or both and only turn in one for judging. Steak Contest Awards begin at 5 p.m.” BBQ competition awards will be presented Sunday, July 26, at 2 p.m. Due to COVID 19, some events will not be held. There will not be bean bag tournaments, mega pong tournament, live music or a free-will-offering meal. All children’s activities, including water slides, have been canceled. There will not be food vendors on site. The Craft Show is Saturday at the open air pavillion at the fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The Saturday Tractor Ride begins with registration at 8 a.m. Tractors leave the fairgrounds at 9 a.m. and ride to Graettinger and back. The Car Show. Vehicles will be on display from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Emmetsburg Fire Department will host Firefighter Water Fights on Saturday at 2 p.m. Fire fighters will set up on Madison Street in front of the fairgrounds. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are asking people to please restrain from attending if they have shown any signs or symptoms or have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past two weeks,” said Mehan. “On the recommendation of Palo Alto County Public Health, we are recommending that people wear a mask. Social distancing will also be recommended.”
