JoAnn Catherine Pugh died on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022. She is in comfort with the Lord after a strong and courageous 6 ½ year battle against ovarian cancer. Surrounded by husband Matt, daughter Amanda (Nate), son Michael, and daughter Sarah, as well as family and friends for the last several days, she is now at peace.
JoAnn was born on Oct. 14, 1964 to her parents Martha and Joe Mergen as the eighth of nine children. JoAnn graduated from Garrigan High School in Algona. She received her degree in elementary education from Iowa State University. JoAnn and Matt began their family in Boone and settled in Emmetsburg to raise their three beautiful children.
For the last 17 years, JoAnn has taught at West Bend-Mallard School District. There she enjoyed spending time with the students and staff. She absolutely loved teaching.
JoAnn supported her children in all of their activities and hobbies. She loved to listen to the radio in the kitchen and dance with her kids and husband. She spoiled her four grand-dogs: Jax, Nash, Ki, and Midas. In her free time, she enjoyed going for walks, playing cards, and laying in the sun with friends. She was known for her delicious puppy chow, monster cookie, and scotcheroo recipes.
She was grateful for her family and many wonderful friends, as well as the amazing doctors and nurses in Emmetsburg and at Mayo Clinic in Rochester who have provided her excellent care over the years.
