A Celebration of Life for Karen Hubbell is Saturday, Dec. 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.
A service will be held Saturday, Dec. 3, at 3 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home. Dave Mork will officiate.
Inurnment will be at the West Bend Cemetery in West Bend. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Karen Hubbell, daughter of Melvin Edwin and Betty Jane (Kisch) Perkins, was born Feb. 23, 1957 in Emmetsburg. She received her education in West Bend, and while in high school, Karen participated in track, qualifying for State competition, in the mile run. She graduated from West Bend High School in 1975. Karen continued her education at Iowa Lakes Community College where she played basketball and received her LPN license.
In June 1984 Karen was united in marriage to James “Jim” Hubbell at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in West Bend. After her marriage Karen completed her Registered Nursing degree from Iowa Lakes Community College in 1988. They were blessed with three children.
Karen was employed as a Registered Nurse at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, in the OB ward. She went on to become a traveling nurse in North Carolina and Arizona before deciding to stay in Arizona. In 2013 Karen moved back to Iowa and worked as a floor nurse and in E.R. at Palo Alto County Hospital, from 2013 until her retirement in 2021.
Karen enjoyed swimming, running, playing basketball and water skiing. She was a wonderful cook and her family especially enjoyed her homemade bread and ribs.
Karen passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2022 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, at the age of 65. She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Betty Perkins and a brother-in-law, Aaron Wirtz.
She is survived by her children, Abby Hubbell of Emmetsburg, Emily (Chris) Hart of Algona, and Jason (Ashley) Hubbell of Rolfe; seven grandchildren, Catherine, Matthew, Joseph and Isabel Hart, Ellie, Natalie and Lincoln Hubbell; brothers, John (Laurie) Perkins of Lyons, CO, Mike (Janet) Perkins of Titonka; sisters, Lisa (Steve) Criswell of Texas, Carol (Dave) Forey of Ruthven, Teresa (Joel) Kellenberger of Algona, Lori (Jim) Detrick of Ankeny, and Peggy Wirtz of Belmond; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
