Funeral service for Lucille Sewell was held Monday, Dec. 12 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Bill Schreiber was the officient. Interment will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetary in Emmetsburg.
Lucille Ann (Conway) Sewell was born on January 3, 1929, in Vernon Township, Graettinger, Iowa, the daughter of Leo and Nellie (Calentine) Conway, Sr. Lucille passed away on Friday, December 9, 2022 at Parc Hall in Emmetsburg at the age of 93 years.
Lucille attended rural school in Vernon Township and graduated in 1947 from Ringsted High School. As a one-room schoolteacher, she taught for four years in rural schools in Vernon and Freedom townships. She taught around twenty students each year, ranging from kindergarten through the 8th grade level.
Lucille was united in marriage to Wayne Dean Sewell on June 25, 1951 at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg and celebrated 69 years together in 2020. Wayne and Lucille lived in Emmetsburg, West Bend and Guthrie Center before moving to Willow Ridge in Emmetsburg in the fall of 2015. Lucille was a member of Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg and was a 50-year member of the Catholic Daughters of America at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in West Bend. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church while in Guthrie Center and regularly attended a bible study group and First Friday of the month Mass followed by the coffee club.
Lucille was a strong woman of faith and a role model for her family with her dedicated daily prayer life. She loved spending time with her family, including her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her love of family was shown through her cooking, baking and celebration of birthdays and the holidays - all the shopping, prep work, baking, cooking, and decorating. She enjoyed reading, embroidery work, and word search puzzles. For many years, she gathered annually with her sisters for a weekend celebration - sharing memories and family updates. She also stayed in contact with her extended family by sending them birthday and anniversary cards into her early 90's.
She is survived by her children: Pat (Bill) Bleuer of West Bend, Bob (Kay) Sewell of Milford, Betty (Jim) Makey of Box Elder, SD, Mary (Bill) Krakau of Roland, Sharon (Patrick) Flanery of Omaha, NE, and Deanne (Chad) Sheley of Casey; 22 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; her sisters Alice Murphy and Virginia Fokken of Cherokee, Mary Ellen Schroder of Ankeny, Frances (Ben) Brink of Rock Rapids, sister-in-law Arlene Conway of Emmetsburg, brothers-in-law Harry Hauber of Spirit Lake and Jim (Karen) Sewell of West Bend, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne; her infant daughter, Kathryn; her parents; sisters Florence Lynch, Edna Nelson and Delores Hauber; brother Leo Conway, Jr.; and brothers-in law Bob Lynch, Chuck Nelson, Don Murphy, Bob Schroder, Paul Fokken, Kenton (Posie) Sewell, Gene Sewell, John (Dorothy) Sewell; and sisters-in-law Bette (John) Fancolly, Joyce (Les) Bunn, and Nan (Hux) Cook.
