Funeral services for 79 year old Ruth Ann Kane will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. at Holy Family Catholic Church with services to follow. Interment is at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg, Iowa

Ruth Ann Kane, daughter of Glenn W.E. and Helen (Bell ) Peterson, was born April 30, 1945 in Cherokee, Iowa.  Ruth was raised on a farm near Alta where her parents farmed.  She received her education in the Alta School system graduating from Alta High School in 1963.  Ruth continued her education at Morningside College in Sioux City where she received a B.A. Degree in Education, with an English endorsement.


Teaching became a great passion for Ruth as she began her career in the Primghar school system, teaching elementary school.  On June 7, 1969 Ruth was united in marriage to George William Kane at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa.  They were blessed with a daughter, Mary and a son, Jim.

Ruth continued teaching in Alta and later Mallard schools.  In 1987 Ruth and George moved their family from Mallard to Emmetsburg where they made their home.  Ruth continued teaching in Mallard until her retirement, teaching a total of 31 years.

Ruth was a faithful member of the churches in the communities in which she lived. Currently Ruth was a member of Holy Family Parish and participated in the prayer chain.  She was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority, Delta Mu Chapter for 60 years. Her family was very important to her as was her career.  She did an exceptional job of being there for her family as well as for her students.  Ruth enjoyed both singing and listening to music, doing crossword puzzles and keeping up on all of her friends and family through Facebook.  Ruth was an avid Hawkeye fan and also loved watching her children in their athletic events.

Ruth passed away Saturday, May 4, 2024 at the Emmetsburg Care Center in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 79.  She was preceded in death by an infant brother; her parents, Glenn and Helen Peterson; her husband, George Kane; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, M.J. “Dude” and Mary Kane.

Ruth is survived by her children, Mary Kane Alger of Shakopee, Minnesota and Jim Kane and his wife, Heather of Norwalk, Iowa; six grandchildren, James, Alan, Katie and Kassidy Alger, and Aidan and Addison Kane;  three great grandchildren, Jayden, Jaxsen and Willow; as well as many other relatives and friends.
