Funeral service for Clifford Hinrichs will be held Friday, April 14 at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Lana Williams will officiate. Inurnment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Emmetsburg. Visitation will be Thursday, April 13 from 4-7 p.m. at Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.
Clifford Jesse Hinrichs, son of Arthur and Ida (Skinner) Hinrichs, was born on Sept. 26, 1935, in Sioux City. He grew up in Coleridge, Nebraska, and received a football scholarship to Morningside College. On Dec. 29, 1958, he was united in marriage to Nancy Milander and together they raised three daughters, Kris, Lisa, and Deena.
Cliff was a hardworking and dedicated individual throughout his life, holding various roles including ironworker in California, owner/operator of A & W, loan officer at Iowa Trust & Savings Bank, maintenance at Palo Alto County Hospital, and employee at Palo Alto County Conservation. He was also a board member on the National Advisory Council for A & W Restaurants, president of the Iowa A & W Association, and president and board member of the Emmetsburg Country Club Board of Directors. Cliff was a natural leader and excelled in any role he undertook.
Outside of work, Cliff had many interests, including classic cars, boating, fishing, golfing, and football. He was always up for a good time and had a great sense of humor. He was a proud and adoring grandfather to 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. All of them affectionately knew him as “Papa.”
Cliff passed away at the age of 87 on April 10, 2023, in Emmetsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Ida Hinrichs, his son in infancy, and his siblings, Darrell Hinrichs, Sharron Hefner, and his great-granddaughter Leia Gambell.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, his daughters Kris (Dave) Sellers, Lisa (Todd) Gappa, and Deena (Scott) Rogers, his siblings Virginia Jordan, Janice Hefner, Helen Hansen, Betty Fluent, Glenda Welker, Darlene Arduser, his grandchildren Lauren (Jake) Jensen, Charlie (Maggie) Sellers, Danny Sellers, Kelly (Mark) Klaus, Stacy (Tony) Brugman, Cortney (Chris) Gambell, Bobby Gappa, Andrew (Abby) Rogers, Jesse Rogers, Faith Rogers, and 15 great-grandchildren.
Cliff's wit and charm will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His positive outlook on life and ability to light up a room will never be forgotten.
