Delores Marie Stroup, the daughter of Alfred and Coral (Rittgers) Breiholz was born on July 12, 1926 at the family’s farm near Rolfe. She attended country school, District No. 8, before entering high school at West Bend High School in 1939. She was an honor
student and played the clarinet in the band. She graduated in 1943 and attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) for 2 years, receiving her teaching certificate in 1945. She continued taking classes offered at nearby locations at night, on weekends or
in the summer one at a time for the next few years, until earning a BA degree from Drake University in 1978.
Delores signed a contract in the spring of 1945 to teach first grade in Mallard in the fall. She taught in the lower grades at Mallard for 41 years, retiring in 1992. She was a dedicated, caring teacher striving to help every student achieve success in her class.
Delores met Robert (Bob) Stroup in Mallard and they were married in the First Methodist Church in West Bend on June 13, 1948. They lived in Mallard and were active in the community. Bob passed away in 1995 and Delores remained in Mallard until 2004. She had
some health issues and moved to Woodbury Estates, an assisted living facility in Woodbury, Minnesota. She kept busy, reading, working word search puzzles and watching television. She enjoyed watching Iowa and Iowa State football and basketball games on television
when they were available as well as Minnesota Twins games. She also enjoyed watching the Game Show Network which kept her mind sharp. She was a favorite of the staff because she rarely complained or made demands and was always interested in hearing about their families and interests.
She enjoyed being near her grandchildren, watching them marry and have children. She attended many holiday and birthday celebrations as well as family dinners. Her eyesight began to diminish due to glaucoma the last few years and eventually it was difficult for her to go out, but she loved having them visit and share their interests.
She will be cherished and remembered by her daughter, Joan (Sid) Cornelius of Woodbury; her grandson, Neil (Katie) Hockert of Woodbury; her granddaughter Joy (Eric) Shafer of River Falls, Wisconsin; great-grandchildren, Mae and Henry Hockert and Lucy and Ivan Shafer and other family members.
Delores was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, her parents, Al and Coral Breiholz, Bob’s parents, Sam and Edith Stroup, her brother, Robert Breiholz and his wife Doris, two infant children and all of Bob’s siblings and their spouses.
