John Paul Frederick, son of Kathleen (Kate) and Leland Frederick, was born on July 13, 1958 in Carroll, Iowa. John was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Known for his unwavering love of God, country, and football, John led a life marked by faith, patriotism,
and adventure.

After graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1977, John began his 21-year career with the United States Army. He served with distinction in multiple roles, including as a drill sergeant and Army Ranger, earning numerous medals of achievement. His military career took him across the world, including a memorable period stationed in Germany. John’s dedication and bravery left a powerful impact on all who served alongside him. During this time, he also became a father to his beloved children, Bryan and Kristin Frederick.

Once retired from the Army, John returned to Emmetsburg, Iowa where he reconnected with a high school classmate who was the love of his life, Laurie Doran-Frederick (Nauss). They were married in 2003 in Sandwich, Massachusetts and have enjoyed 26 years of partnership, building a life full of love, laughter, and companionship. After one too many brutal east coast winters, John and Laurie settled in Arizona and have lived there for the past 20 years. John cherished his family deeply and took pride in his role as a father, stepfather, and grandfather. In recent months,
his faith was especially meaningful to him, and he looked forward to being baptized again.

John worked for an additional 26 years in the private sector before recently retiring this year. He was excited to embark on new adventures with Laurie hoping to travel and visit family and friends around the country. John was passionate about riding his Harley Davidson, finding freedom and joy on the open road. There was seldom a day he wasn’t present at The American Legion Post 39 in Gilbert, AZ, a place that made him lifelong friends and a spot that was particularly meaningful to him.

John is survived by his loving wife, Laurie; his son Bryan Frederick and wife Amber, along with his cherished grandson Owen; his daughter Kristin Frederick; his stepchildren Kyle Doran and wife Ashley, Bridgette and Eric Doran as well as his father-in-law, Donald C. Nauss. He also leaves behind his siblings Mary (Dan) Cooper, Alice (Jim) Haht, Cathy (Mark) Berkland, Therese (Chuck) Schany, and Joe Frederick. He joins his parents in rest, Kathleen (Kate) and Leland Frederick, his brothers Tom and Jim Frederick and his mother-in-law Floranne (Flo) Nauss.

John will be remembered for his strength, kindness and loyalty, and for the joy he found in his faith, his family and his Harley. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him, and he will be dearly missed and loved always.
