A Celebration of Life for Karen Hanson will be held at a later date.

Karen Lee Hanson, daughter of Robert Lee Hanson and Mary Ann (Kirkegaard) Abels, was born November 21, 1950, in Estherville, Iowa. She received her education at Emmetsburg High School, graduating in 1969.

Following high school, Karen worked for the state of Minnesota for several years serving those with disabilities. After retiring, she moved to Emmetsburg to be closer to family.

Karen was a great fan of the Green Bay Packers and enjoyed watching them play. She even had a share in the team’s ownership. Karen had several hobbies including writing and collaging. She was known to decorate the walls in her room with pictures and stickers. One of her collage projects won a blue ribbon at the Clay County Fair. More than anything else, she loved her family, especially her granddaughters’ Girls Club where they would pinky swear to “love you always” and go on many adventures together.

Karen passed away on Monday, July 15, 2024, in Spencer, Iowa, at the age of 73. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Helen Hauschildt; father, Robert Hanson; and brother-in-law, Robert Darling.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Abels of Emmetsburg, Iowa; two granddaughters, Cassidy (Jedediah) Nelson and Ashley Kobs; four great-grandchildren, Savannah, Keziah, Blake, and Eliza; sister, Sheryl Darling of Emmetsburg, Iowa; brothers, Richard (Mary Beth) Hanson of Algona, Iowa, William (Charlene) Hanson of Sierra Vista, Arizona, Paul (Zhenya) Hanson of Aurora, Colorado, and Larry (Paula) Hanson of O’Fallon, Missouri; as well as many other relatives and friends.
