A Celebration of Life for Larry Bendixen was held Sunday, Nov. 13, at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Lana Williams officiated.
Inurnment will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel at a later date . The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.
Larry, son of Clarence and Amelia (Shaw) Bendixen, was born on the farm near Rolfe. He attended school in Mallard where he graduated in 1959, and he pursued his career in the Armed Forces.
Larry was united in marriage to Dixie Kay Argabright on June 9, 1963. They had three children: Larry, Jr. who died in infancy, Vernewood now of Eagleville, MO and Valerie K (Bill) DeMoss now of Martinsville, MO.
Throughout Larry's military career, he served in Vietnam, toured abroad several times and was also stationed in several Air Force and Naval Bases here in the U.S.
After his retirement in 1980, he settled in Mallard. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his family, watching sports, family reunions, working at the "Gun Shop", volunteering at Lost Island Nature Center and always having time to visit with friends and family.
In these last few years, Larry struggled and overcame several health issues. He had a deep faith in God, and on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022 he felt God's Calling, peacefully passing away at St. Joseph, MO hospital, at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his first child, Larry Jr.; his mother and father, Clarence and Amelia Bendixen; one brother and three sisters, Lois (Stan) Reinders, Janette (Robert) Darling, Jim Bendixen and Janice Brown.
Survived by his son, Verne Bendixen; daughter and son-in-law, Valerie K and Bill DeMoss; two grandchildren, Michael Bendixen and Keaton DeMoss; great-granddaughter, Novaleigh; son-in-law, Roger Brown, as well as many other relatives and friends.
