Virginia Ann (Schupfer) Cullen, age 92, was called home on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at PARC Hall in Emmetsburg, Iowa.
Virginia was born to Frank and Alice (Flynn) Schupfer on March 25, 1933 in Mallard, Iowa. After graduating high school, Virginia was employed by the Quaker Oats Company in Emmetsburg, Iowa as a book-keeper.
She met George Cullen at one of the Saturday night dances at the gymnasium at the Catholic School. They were married on July 19, 1952 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. To this union 13 children were born. Ten of the children attended and graduated from Catholic School and went on to graduate from Emmetsburg High School. She and her late husband raised their children according to Catholic beliefs and their children are all enjoying successful and happy lives because of that guidance.
As a certified day-care provider, she was a mother figure to many many children that she cared for throughout the years.
She enjoyed going to garage sales, sewing, shopping at Books N Things and shopping at Del’s Garden Center in Spencer, Iowa. Her most memorable trips were to Europe and Hawaii.
She was a strong, resilient and loving mother who in spite of losing her mother and husband within one month of each other, persevered in raising her family, instilling her strong morals and providing so much love.
She is survived by her ten children: Linda (Cliff) Vaske of Nicollet, MN; Diana (Mike) Wallace of Okoboji, IA; Carol Cullen of Waukee, IA; George (Birgit) Cullen of Cape Coral, FL; Janet Flanery of Adel, IA; Alice (Dale) Engelhardt of Arlington, WI; Donna (Scott) Neubauer of Ames, IA; Colleen (Louis) Loges of Omaha, NE; Mike Cullen of Emmetsburg, IA; and Scott (Julie) Cullen of Granger, IA.
She is also survived by her 22 grand-children: Tracy (Phil) Heinbaugh; Candy (Dale) Hoehn; Clint (Cheryl) Vaske; Maribeth (Christopher) Wetzel; Gabrielle (Marvin) Sullivan; Caitlyn Cullen; Carter Cullen; Brian Cullen; Ashley (Sascha Veth) Cullen; Sean Flanery; Rafe Flanery; Matthew (Janna) Engelhardt, Megan (Alexander) Flynn, Mitchell Engelhardt; Adam (Karen) Neubauer; Mandy (Jared) Atkinson; Kyle Loges; Cuinn Cullen and Clare Cullen; 2 step grand-children; and 26 great grand-children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Cullen; 1 son and 2 daughters in infancy; her parents, Frank and Alice (Flynn) Schupfer; 1 grand-daughter, Amber Vaske; daughter-in-law, Olivia Cullen; sons-in-law, Larry Sarchett and Patrick Flanery.
It is with great sorrow that we bid farewell to Virginia.
