Funeral Services for Marguerite Jones, 96, of Ruthven were held on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at United Methodist Church in Ruthven. Reverend Kris Hackbart was the celebrant.
Interment was at Crown Hill Cemetery in Ruthven, Iowa.
Marguerite Jane Merrill was born November 4, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa to Royce J. and Edna (Short) Merrill. She was baptized and confirmed at the Wesley Methodist Church. Marguerite attended Wallace Elementary and Amos Hiatt Junior High, before entering East High School, graduating in June, 1946. Following graduation she worked for General Motors Parts Division and for H.J. åHeinz Company, both in Des Moines.
Marguerite met Bob Jones while working at Texas A&M College in College Station, Texas. On June 7, 1951, Marguerite and Robert Gaylon Jones of Edgewood, Texas were married at the Wesley Methodist Church in Des Moines, Iowa. Bob was a student at Texas A&M at the time. Bob and Marguerite made their home in St. Ansgar, Ames, Webster City, Sigourney, Emmetsburg and settled on a farm in the Ruthven area in 1966. They remained on the farm until the fall of 2014 when she and Bob moved into Ruthven. They had the joy of celebrating 72 years of marriage together.
Marguerite was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ruthven. She was active in the United Methodist Women, Sarah Circle and had served on the Administrative Board and several committees in the church. She was the director of the Junior Choir for three years in the early 70s.
Marguerite was a devoted homemaker and loved the time she spent with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandsons. She enjoyed getting together with her many friends and extended family. She loved sending greeting cards and was the UMW Sunshine Lady for many years. Marguerite also loved receiving cards from others. She looked forward to holidays which were an especially happy time for Marguerite when her families from Texas and Arkansas could attend.
Marguerite passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at the Ruthven Community Care Center at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents, Royce and Edna Merrill; her daughter, Robin Ann in 1978; her husband, Robert in 2022; a sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Carl Schluter; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Phillip and Ann Merrill and Warren and Doris Merrill.
She is survived by her sons, Kevin (Debra) Jones of Urbandale, Iowa and Tom (Sandi) Jones of Emmetsburg, Iowa; four grandchildren, Lauren (Nate) Smith of Cameron, Missouri, Max Jones of Grimes, Emma Jones of Urbandale, Iowa and Abby Jones of Urbandale, Iowa; great-grandsons, Reid and Benson Smith of Cameron, Missouri; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
