Funeral services for 93 year old Leland “Lee” Frederick will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at 10:30 A.M. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Interment is at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.

Leland “Lee” Edward Frederick, son of Clarence and Alice (Conway) Frederick, was born May 19, 1930 in Freedom Township, near Cylinder, Iowa.  Lee graduated from Lake Center Township High School in Clay County, Iowa.  He continued his education at A.I.B. College in Des Moines, graduating with a  four year degree.

On May 27, 1952 Lee was united in marriage to Kathleen “Kate” Brennan at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven, Iowa.  A few months following their marriage, Lee entered the United States Army on August 22, 1952 and he served his country during the Korean War.  On October 15, 1953 Lee received word from the American Red Cross that he was the proud father of a baby girl, Mary Kathleen.  Lee and Kate were later blessed with seven more children.  Lee was Honorably Discharged as a Highly Decorated Veteran, on May 22, 1954, from active duty.  Lee and Kate returned to Palo Alto County in 1958 where they made their home and raised their family.

Lee was employed at Production Credit Association in Emmetsburg for 26 years before accepting the position of Emmetsburg City Administrator.  Lee worked for the City for 10 years before retiring.

Lee was a faithful member of Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg and had served as Treasurer of Assumption Catholic Church.  Lee was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years and an active member of the V.F.W. Post #2295 in Emmetsburg.

Lee and Kate were both very active in Horizons Unlimited.  Lee was one of the original founders and was a board member for several years, having served as President.  He was instrumental in establishing group homes for the clients so they could have the opportunity to live as independently as possible.

Lee enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.  He was also an avid reader and was very interested in history and music.  Lee and Kate traveled extensively, taking trips to Germany, Ireland, and Hawaii as well as many other locations.  They loved the time they were able to spend with their children and grandchildren, as well as their extended families, often getting together for family reunions.  They looked forward to the St. Patrick’s Day celebration each year, participating in many events throughout the years.

Lee passed away Saturday, April 13, 2024 at PARC Hall in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 93.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Alice Frederick; his wife, Kathleen “Kate”; sons, Thomas “Tom” Frederick and James “Jimmy” Frederick; brothers, Donald Frederick and Ralph Frederick; and a sister, Marie Pettit.
