Services will be held at a later date for Marvyl Guess, 92, of Emmetsburg.
Marvyl Guess, daughter of J.P. and Clara Catherine (Ortosen) Krebs, was born July 29, 1930, in Carroll, Iowa. She received her education in Manson, graduating from Manson High School in 1948. While in high school, Marvyl participated in cheerleading.
In the summer of 1948, Marvyl met Tom Guess in Plover, Iowa and they were married on June 23, 1949 in Rolfe, Iowa. Marvyl and Tom made their home in Emmetsburg until 1959 when they moved to their acreage outside of town where they raised their five children. Marvyl was employed at Farm Mutual Insurance for 40 years before retiring and she was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Marvyl loved living on the acreage where she spent hours caring for her flowers and yard, as well as feeding and watching the birds, squirrels and deer. She loved to sunbathe on the pond on a raft that Tom built her and entertained friends and family around the farm pond. Marvyl enjoyed bowling, playing golf, and snowmobiling with friends. Marvyl was an avid reader and a skilled Bridge player, always ready to join her friends for a game. She knit beautiful afghans for her family members.
In 1992 Marvyl and Tom moved into Emmetsburg with their “favorite child”, Molly, their English Mastiff. Tom and Marvyl enjoyed several winters in Texas and trips to Mexico with very special friends and family. Her most recent companion was her Yorkie, Boots. Marvyl cherished every minute she could spend with her family and looked forward to visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was blessed to have her granddaughter, Missy Smith Hall and her husband, Troy, help care for her during her last few years.
Marvyl passed away Friday, December 9, 2022 at her home in Emmetsburg at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom; a son, Brian Guess; and seven siblings and their spouses, Ruth, Charlotte, Elmer, Gladys, Julius, Norma and June.
