Mass of Christian burial for Michael Van Oosbree will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg Jan. 4 at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Bill Schreiber will officiate. Burial will take place at St. John’s Catholic Cemetary.
Michael William Van Oosbree, son of Chris J. and Mary Margaret (Rielly) Van Oosbree, was born November 17, 1959 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Mike began his education at Emmetsburg Catholic School and at the beginning of third grade he attended Emmetsburg public school, graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1979. While in high school, Mike wrestled, played baseball and football. He was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl for football and the East/West Dual for wrestling.
Following high school Mike attended the University of Northern Iowa, where he wrestled and earned a Bachelors Degree in Education. He taught and coached and also had his certification as an umpire and a referee which he utilized throughout the area for several years. After leaving the teaching profession, Mike moved to Algona where he laid carpet and did flooring installation. He later lived in Emmetsburg, Sioux City and South Dakota before returning to Emmetsburg due to health reasons.
Mike was married to Portlind Albright and they were blessed with three children, Dylan, Tessa and Michael. He was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg and the Knights of Columbus in both Algona and Emmetsburg. He was also a member of Pheasants Forever and the Whittemore Sons of the American Legion. Mike enjoyed following sporting events and loved family get togethers.
Mike passed away Friday, December 23, 2022 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital at the age of 63. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Joseph Van Oosbree; his parents, Chris and Mary Van Oosbree; and a sister-in-law, Helen Van Oosbree.
He is survived by his children, Dylan (Bong) Van Oosbree of Carlisle, Iowa, Tessa Simpson of Bondurant, Iowa and Michael Van Oosbree of Bondurant, Iowa seven grandchildren, Isabella, Grace, Truman and Harrison Van Oosbree, Abby, Ellie, and Jay Simpson; his siblings, Jim (Deb) Van Oosbree of Rochester, Minnesota, Mary Therese Morley of Omaha, Nebraska, John (Jackie) Van Oosbree of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Jerry (Judy) Van Oosbree of Adams, Minnesota, Tom (Jennifer) Van Oosbree of Madison, Wisconsin, Patricia (Kathy) Van Oosbree of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Fr. Chris Van Oosbree of St. Louis, Missouri, David (Katie) Van Oosbree of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Mark (Jeanne) Van Oosbree of Maple Grove, Minnesota, Paul (Vicky) VanOosbree of Independence, Missouri, and Cathy (Kevin) Twait of Manson, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
