Roy Edward Luhman, son of William and Edith (Peebles) Luhman, was born on Feb. 26, 1934, on the family farm east of Graettinger. He passed away on Jan. 4, 2023, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg at the age of 88 years.
When Roy was a child, the family moved to the farm south of town. Roy graduated from Graettinger High School in 1952. He enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. Following his honorable discharge, he and a couple fellow soldiers drove the Alcan Highway back to Iowa. There he continued to farm with his family. He met Gerda Weiss at The Plantation Ballroom near Cylinder (and after a long wait for her to “grow up”), the couple was united in marriage during a blizzard at the Methodist Church in Graettinger on Feb. 17, 1962. Roy and Gerda farmed the family farm until their retirement in 2005. Roy only lived in two houses his entire life.
Roy had a lifelong passion for aviation and was proud to earn his private pilot’s license. Roy and Gerda attended the airshow in Oshkosh, WI many times. The couple enjoyed traveling together, taking cruises to beautiful locations, yearly trips to fish in Canada, and driving the Alcan Highway back to Alaska. Roy enjoyed music and singing. He liked drinking coffee with his farming buddies at the Happy Hour Café and solving the world’s problems together. He and Gerda loved socializing with their friends, frequenting the VFW in the earlier years, and Hillcrest in later years. Roy was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Graettinger.
Roy is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gerda Luhman of Graettinger; his children Lisa (Marty) Titus of Omaha, NE and Bill (Marcie) Luhman of Lincoln, NE; his grandchildren Alia (Jake) Holman, Kelsey (Torin) Otis, Alexandra (Kaleb) Vig, and Brianna Luhman; his great-grandson Jacob Holman and soon-to-arrive great-granddaughter Kennedy Holman. Roy is also survived by his sister, Marvis Duus, of Graettinger.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents; siblings Ina Mae (Bill) Voigt and Fredrick (LaVonne) Luhman; brother-in-law Richard Duus; and his Uncle Charles Luhman.
